クリスマスが単なるパーティーの1つである日本では、特に考えずにメリークリスマスと言ってますが、クリスマスを祝う人達は宗教の多様性を考え、Happy Holidays というような言い方にしていることが多いです。Christmasは文字通りキリスト教の言い方ですね。

Christmas is just one of party opportunities in Japan, same as Halloween. People buy a large cake and fried/smoked chicken to have a party with family and friends. Please don't feel offended if someone Japanese tells you "Merry Christmas" when you're not Christian.
